Dan Marmorstein
Piano compositions and improvisations

Den herboende amerikanske komponist Dan Marmorstein giver denne aften en af sine sjældne koncerter, hvor han vil opføre egne kompositioner og improvisationer.

Dan Marmorstein is interested in exploring that specific place where the spontaneous physical energy of improvised music is braided together with the structural coherence of composed music. When Thelonious Monk was asked what kinds of music he liked, he is said to have replied, "I like all kinds of music." Marmorstein has followed courses of instruction at New England Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, Mannes College of Music and Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam and has learned from many different individuals: composers Harold Shapero, Peter Pindar Stearns and Ib Nørholm; pianists Barbara Meister and Henry Weinberger; guitarists Eric Frandsen and Michael Gregory and pianist-composers Ran Blake, Misha Mengelberg, Mal Waldron, Marilyn Crispell and Cecil Taylor.

Ever since being invited by director Alan Pierce to compose incidental music for a choreographic script authored by Charles Olsen, Appolonius of Tyana, which was presented in 1980 at the Amos Eno Gallery on
Wooster Street in Soho, Marmorstein has been writing music that is frequently oriented toward dance, film and poetry. In the summer of 1998, together with composer Vagn Olsson, Marmorstein co-founded a composer's amalgamation going by the name of SCORE.

For the past twenty-three years, Marmorstein has been living and working in Copenhagen. He has performed as a soloist and in the setting of group improvisations in Denmark, the United States,
Iceland, China, the Netherlands, Finland and Germany.
